Above-Ground Pool Sizes
Pool size is the decision everything else follows from β how much chlorine you buy, what pump you need, how long it takes to heat, and whether it fits your yard at all. Below is every common size with the numbers that matter, plus the clearance rules people usually discover too late.
The short version
- 24 ft round is the most popular size sold, at roughly 13,000 gallons.
- 18 ft round is the smallest that comfortably suits a family of four.
- Your yard needs the pool diameter plus about 6 ft, before any property-line setback.
- Going up one size step adds roughly 25β30 percent to running costs, because chemicals and heating both scale with volume.
Round pool sizes
Round pools are cheaper per gallon and much more forgiving to install, because water pressure spreads evenly around the wall with no corners to engineer. This is why they outsell every other shape.

Rectangular pool sizes
Rectangular pools cost more for the same volume and demand a more precisely level base, but they are the only shape where swimming lengths is realistic. Below about 24 ft long, that is not really on the table.

How the numbers were worked out
Volumes assume a 52 inch wall with the waterline six inches below the rim, which is where a pool actually runs β about 3 ft 10 in of water. Manufacturer listings usually quote the pool filled to the very top, so box figures read a few percent higher than these. For a round pool the maths is:
gallons = 3.14 / 4 x diameterΒ² x depth x 7.48
Pump flow is sized for a full turnover every eight hours, which is the standard target for residential pools. Running a smaller pump for longer achieves the same turnover and usually costs less in electricity.
Space you need around the pool
The pool footprint is not the space requirement. This is the part people get wrong, and it is expensive to discover after delivery.
3 ft clear on every side
Minimum working space to assemble the wall, and later to walk around it with a brush. Squeezing a pool against a fence makes the far side unmaintainable.
10 ft from the property line
A common setback in residential codes, though it ranges from 4 to 15 ft. Check before you buy, not after β this is the rule that most often kills a plan.
10+ ft from trees
Roots damage the base and leaves mean constant skimming. Overhanging branches are worse than they sound.
Clear of all overhead power lines
Non-negotiable, and typically 22 ft of clearance in the NEC. No pool may sit under a service drop.
Level within 1 inch
Across the whole pad. An out-of-level above-ground pool pushes water to one side and can collapse the wall β the single most common cause of catastrophic failure.

- What is the most popular above-ground pool size?
- The 24 ft round is the most commonly sold size in the US. It holds roughly 13,000 gallons, fits a family of four with friends, and still fits in a typical suburban back yard with the required clearance.
- How many gallons is a 24 ft round pool?
- About 13,000 gallons with a 52 inch wall filled to the normal waterline, six inches below the rim. Manufacturer figures often quote closer to 14,000 because they assume the pool is filled to the very top, which you should not do.
- How much yard space do I need for an above-ground pool?
- Add at least 3 ft to every side of the pool for working and walking space, then check your local setback from the property line, which is commonly 10 ft. A 24 ft round pool therefore needs about a 30 ft clear circle, not 24 ft.
- Is a round or rectangular above-ground pool better?

- What size pump do I need for my pool?
- Size the pump to turn the whole pool over about twice a day. Divide your gallonage by 480 to get the flow in gallons per minute for an eight-hour turnover β a 13,000 gallon pool needs roughly 27 GPM.
- Does a bigger pool cost much more to run?
- Yes, and it scales with volume rather than price. Chemicals, heating and pump run-time all track gallons, so a 30 ft round costs roughly 60 percent more per season to run than a 24 ft, despite being only 6 ft wider.
