The short version
Pool maintenance sounds complicated because it is usually explained backwards โ as a list of chemicals rather than as a routine. In practice, keeping a backyard pool clear comes down to three things: keep the water moving, keep a sanitizer in it, and keep the chemistry in a range where that sanitizer can do its job.
Get those three right and you will almost never have a green pool. Get them wrong and no amount of shock, clarifier, or algaecide will fix things for long. Everything below is an expansion of those three ideas.
If you own a pool and do nothing else, do this: test the water twice a week, keep free chlorine between 1 and 3 ppm, keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6, run the pump long enough each day to turn the water over once, and brush the walls weekly. That is the whole job.
Your weekly routine, in order
Doing these tasks in the right order matters more than most beginners expect. Skimming before you brush means you are not fishing the same leaves out twice, and testing before you dose means you are treating an actual reading instead of a guess.
1. Skim the surface. Leaves float for a while, then sink and stain. Two minutes with a net saves an hour of vacuuming later, and organic debris consumes chlorine as it decomposes.
2. Empty the skimmer and pump baskets. A full basket starves the pump of water, which reduces filtration and, over time, damages the pump seal.
3. Brush the walls, steps, and waterline. Algae takes hold on surfaces before it clouds the water. Brushing lifts it into suspension where the chlorine can actually reach it. Corners, ladders, and behind the return jet are the spots people miss.
4. Test the water. Strips are fine for a routine check. Test before adding anything.
5. Adjust chemistry in the right order: alkalinity first, then pH, then sanitizer. Correcting alkalinity moves pH, so doing it the other way round means doing the job twice.
6. Check the filter pressure gauge. A reading 8โ10 psi above the clean baseline means it is time to backwash or clean the cartridge.
7. Top up the water level. It should sit around the middle of the skimmer opening. Too low and the pump can suck air; too high and the skimmer cannot pull surface debris.
Water chemistry: the numbers that matter
There are only five readings worth caring about. Everything else is refinement.
Free chlorine: 1โ3 ppm. This is the sanitizer actively available to kill bacteria and algae. Below 1 ppm you are on borrowed time; above 5 ppm is irritating to swim in.
pH: 7.2โ7.6. This is the one most people ignore and it matters enormously. At pH 8.0, chlorine is only about 20 percent as effective as it is at 7.2 โ so a pool with perfect chlorine and high pH behaves like a pool with almost no chlorine at all. If your sanitizer seems to have stopped working, check pH before adding more.
Total alkalinity: 80โ120 ppm. Alkalinity is the buffer that stops pH bouncing around. Low alkalinity gives you a pool whose pH swings every time it rains; get this in range and pH becomes far easier to hold.
Cyanuric acid (stabilizer): 30โ50 ppm. Stabilizer protects chlorine from being destroyed by sunlight โ without it, an unshaded pool can lose most of its chlorine in a single afternoon. But it accumulates and never leaves on its own. Above about 80 ppm it starts locking chlorine up rather than protecting it, and the only fix is draining and replacing part of the water. This is the most common slow-motion mistake in backyard pools, and it comes from using stabilized tablets all season without ever testing for it.
Calcium hardness: 200โ400 ppm. Mostly a concern for plaster and concrete pools. Too low and the water leaches calcium out of the surfaces; too high and you get scale. Vinyl and fibreglass owners can largely ignore this.
How long to run the pump
The rule of thumb is one full turnover per day โ every gallon passing through the filter once in 24 hours. For most backyard pools that works out at roughly 8 hours, but the honest answer depends on your pump's flow rate and your pool's volume.
Work it out properly: pool volume in gallons, divided by pump flow in gallons per hour, gives you turnover hours. A 15,000-gallon pool with a 2,000 GPH pump needs about 7.5 hours.
Run the pump during the day, not overnight. Chlorine is consumed fastest in sunlight and bather load is highest in the afternoon, so that is exactly when you want circulation and filtration happening.
If you have a variable-speed pump, the economics change completely. Running at low speed for 12 hours filters better than running at high speed for 6, and it uses dramatically less electricity, because power draw falls roughly with the cube of the speed. Halving the speed can cut power use by around 80 percent. This is why variable-speed pumps pay for themselves on a pool run every day of the season.
In peak heat or after a pool party, extend the run time. When the water is cold and nobody is swimming, you can cut it back.
Shocking: when, why, and how
Shocking means adding a large dose of chlorine to burn off contaminants that normal levels cannot handle. Do it roughly every one to two weeks in season, and always after heavy rain, a party, or any period when the pool has been neglected.
The counter-intuitive part: a strong chlorine smell means you need to shock, not that you have too much chlorine. That smell is chloramines โ chlorine that has already bonded with sweat, sunscreen, and other organics and is now spent. Shocking breaks those bonds and clears the smell.
Always shock after sunset. Ultraviolet light destroys unstabilized chlorine quickly, so shocking at midday wastes a good portion of the dose before it can work.
Run the pump for at least 8 hours afterwards to circulate it, and do not swim until free chlorine has fallen back below about 5 ppm. Broadcast granular shock slowly around the perimeter rather than dumping it in one spot, particularly with a vinyl liner, which can bleach where undissolved granules settle.
Fixing cloudy water
Cloudy water is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Work through the causes in this order.
Poor filtration is the most common. Check that the pump is running long enough, the basket is clear, and the filter is clean. A cartridge that looks fine can still be blinded with oils.
High pH or high calcium hardness causes fine scale to precipitate out and haze the water. Test and correct.
Low free chlorine allows a bacterial or early algae bloom that clouds the water before it turns visibly green. Shock the pool.
Very fine debris โ pollen, dust, sunscreen residue โ can be too small for the filter to catch. A clarifier clumps those particles into something the filter can trap; a flocculant sinks them to the floor so you can vacuum to waste. Use clarifier for mild haze and flocculant only for serious cases, since flocking requires vacuuming to waste rather than back through the filter.
If cloudy water persists for more than a few days with correct chemistry and adequate run time, the filter medium itself is usually the culprit: sand that has channelled, a cartridge past its life, or DE that needs recharging.
Fixing a green pool
Green means algae, and algae means chlorine lost the fight. The recovery process is the same regardless of how bad it looks โ light green takes a day, deep green takes several.
First, test and correct pH to around 7.2. Shocking at high pH is largely wasted effort.
Brush every surface thoroughly. Algae anchored to the wall is protected from chlorine; brushing lifts it into the water where the chlorine can reach it. This step is the one people skip, and it is the reason their green pool takes a week instead of two days.
Shock hard โ for a visible bloom, two to three times the normal dose. Under-shocking is worse than not shocking, because you knock the algae back without killing it and it returns within days.
Run the pump continuously, 24 hours a day, until the water clears. Clean or backwash the filter frequently during recovery; it will clog fast as dead algae is removed.
The water usually turns cloudy grey or milky blue before it turns clear. That is dead algae, and it is a sign the treatment worked. Keep filtering and vacuum the debris off the floor.
If it goes green repeatedly, stop treating symptoms and check stabilizer. Cyanuric acid above 80 ppm is the usual hidden cause โ the chlorine reading looks fine but the chlorine is chemically locked and cannot work.
A month-by-month calendar
Spring, at opening: remove and clean the cover, top up the water, reassemble the equipment, shock heavily, and run the filter continuously for 24โ48 hours. Test everything, including stabilizer and calcium, since winter changes the balance.
Early summer: settle into the weekly routine. Test twice a week. This is the point to fix any chemistry problem properly, while the water is cool and the swimmer load is low.
Peak summer: test three times a week. Heat, sunlight, and bathers all consume chlorine faster. Expect to shock more often and to top up water lost to evaporation. Check stabilizer monthly if you use stabilized tablets.
Late summer and early autumn: keep the routine going as leaves start to fall. A cover earns its keep here. Falling water temperature reduces chemical demand, so ease back on dosing rather than continuing on autopilot.
Closing: balance the water fully, shock, lower the level below the skimmer if you freeze, blow out the lines, add winterizing chemicals, and cover securely. An hour of care at closing saves a weekend of work at opening โ this is the single highest-return maintenance task of the year.
What it costs to run
For a typical above-ground pool, expect roughly $120โ250 a season in chemicals, $20โ40 in replacement cleaning supplies and filter cartridges, and electricity that depends heavily on your pump.
Electricity is usually the biggest single line, and the one most within your control. An old single-speed pump running 8 hours a day can add $40โ80 a month to a summer bill. The same pool on a variable-speed pump at low speed typically runs $10โ20. Over a season, that difference alone can cover the cost of the pump.
A solar cover is the best value item in pool ownership. It reduces evaporation substantially, which saves water, saves chemicals that evaporate with it, and adds several degrees of warmth without running a heater at all.
Mistakes that cost the most
Ignoring stabilizer. Using stabilized tablets all season without testing cyanuric acid is the most common path to a pool that will not hold chlorine. Test it monthly.
Chasing chlorine while ignoring pH. If chlorine seems ineffective, pH is the first thing to check, not the last.
Adding chemicals without testing. Guessing puts you further out of balance and wastes money.
Mixing chemicals. Never combine chlorine products with each other or with acid in the same container. Add each separately to the pool, with the pump running.
Running the pump too little to save money. Under-filtering costs far more in chemicals and remediation than it saves in electricity.
Skipping the brush. It takes three minutes and prevents the problem that takes a week to fix.
