The short version
A saltwater pool is a chlorine pool. This is the single most important thing to understand, and most comparisons bury it. A salt system does not replace chlorine โ it manufactures chlorine on site from dissolved salt, continuously, instead of you adding it by hand.
So the real question is not salt versus chlorine. It is whether you want to pay a few hundred dollars up front to automate chlorine dosing, and to replace a cell every few years.
For an above-ground pool specifically, that maths is tighter than for an in-ground pool. The generator costs roughly the same either way, but you are spreading it over a smaller pool and often a shorter season.
How a salt system actually works
You dissolve salt in the water to about 3,000 parts per million, roughly a tenth of seawater. Pool water then passes through a salt cell, which uses electrolysis to split the salt into chlorine.
That chlorine sanitizes the pool exactly as tablet chlorine does, then reverts to salt and cycles round again. In principle you rarely add more salt โ you top up only what is lost to splash-out, backwashing, and rain overflow.
The cell is a consumable. Plates degrade over time and cells typically last three to seven years, with replacement running 200 to 800 dollars depending on the system. This is the cost people forget when comparing.
One thing salt systems do not do is remove the need for testing. You still test and correct pH weekly. In fact salt systems push pH upward as a by-product of electrolysis, so you will add acid more often than a tablet-chlorine owner does.
What it costs, honestly
The upfront gap is real, and the payback is slower than salt enthusiasts suggest.

The five-year picture
Over five years the two land in roughly the same place. Salt costs more to install and less to feed; tablets cost nothing to install and more to feed. They converge.
This is worth stating plainly because salt is often marketed as the cheaper option, and for a typical above-ground pool it is not. It is the more convenient option that happens to cost about the same.
Where salt genuinely does win on cost is on large pools with long seasons. The more chlorine you would otherwise buy, the faster the generator pays for itself. Below roughly 10,000 gallons, or in a climate with a short season, it probably never quite does.
The case for saltwater
Convenience is the real product. The generator maintains a steady chlorine level automatically, so you are not handling tablets weekly or coming back from holiday to a green pool. For most people who choose salt and stay happy, this is the whole reason.
The water genuinely does feel different โ softer, less harsh on skin and eyes. This is partly the salt itself and partly that levels stay steady instead of spiking after each manual dose.
Less chlorine smell, too. That smell is chloramines, formed when chlorine reacts with sweat and sunscreen, and it signals badly maintained water rather than too much chlorine. Steady low-level chlorination produces fewer chloramines.
You also stop storing and handling concentrated chlorine, which is a genuine safety benefit in a household with children.
The case for traditional chlorine
It is cheap to start and impossible to break. A floating dispenser and a bucket of tablets gets you sanitizing for under 50 dollars, with no electrical work and nothing that can fail.
You can also respond instantly. If the pool goes cloudy or green, you shock it and it recovers within a day. A salt system can only produce chlorine at its rated rate, so recovering from a bloom is slower โ and most people end up adding liquid chlorine anyway, which undercuts the point.
Nothing wears out. There is no cell to replace on a schedule and no control board to fail out of warranty.
For a seasonal above-ground pool that comes down each winter, this simplicity is a strong argument. Draining and storing a pool with a salt system is more work, and a partial season gives the generator less time to earn its cost.
The corrosion question
Salt water at 3,000 ppm is far less corrosive than seawater, but it is more corrosive than plain pool water, and for above-ground pools this matters more than it does in-ground.
Above-ground pools have steel walls and metal top rails, which are exactly what salt attacks. Most modern models are salt-compatible with corrosion-resistant coatings, but many older and budget pools are not. Check before buying the generator, not after โ installing a salt system in a non-compatible pool can void the warranty and shorten the pool's life.
Heaters deserve particular attention. Older heat exchangers made of copper corrode in salt water; you want cupro-nickel or titanium. Replacing a heat exchanger costs more than the salt system saved.
Also consider what surrounds the pool. Splash-out on natural stone, unsealed concrete, or metal fencing causes staining and corrosion over years. It is a slow problem, not a dramatic one, but it is real.
Which should you choose
Choose saltwater if: your pool is over roughly 10,000 gallons, you keep it up year-round or have a long season, you have confirmed your pool and heater are salt-compatible, and you value not thinking about chlorine more than you value the lowest upfront cost.
Choose traditional chlorine if: your pool is small or seasonal, you take it down each winter, your budget is tight up front, your pool is not confirmed salt-compatible, or you like being able to fix a water problem the same day.
The honest summary: this decision matters far less than the things it distracts from. Consistent testing, running the pump long enough, and keeping pH in range have a much larger effect on your water than which system generates the chlorine. A pool owner who tests weekly will have great water either way, and one who does not will have problems either way.
